JOB SUMMARY:

This position follows DOT laws and regulations and communicates the necessity to class participants.  Delivers classroom, hands-on in-cab and on-range including road environment training instruction to students using full size tractor-trailer including skills monitoring and road monitoring to students in transportation programs or contracted training classes.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs and trains students to do minor repairs to tractor-trailers.
  • Instructs students on location and purpose of various components in diesel trucks and semi-trailers.
  • Teaches students to develop skills in shifting, clutching, cornering, backing, driving, coupling, inspecting and all other necessary competencies in becoming an entry level truck driver.
  • Ensures that Hawkeye Community College and other vendor equipment (e.g. trucks, trailers), facilities, and tools are kept clean and in good condition.
  • Trains students in understanding vehicle components in order to perform pre and post trip inspections.
  • Creates and edits transportation training classes and curriculum.
  • Modifies training content and/or techniques to make information understandable to a diverse student population.
  • Instructs other transportation courses offered at the Regional Transportation Training Center.
  • Travels to other sites and provides instruction.
  • Adheres to DOT, Hawkeye Community College, and departmental safety regulations and rules.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma.
  • Two years full-time over the road or local driving experience.
  • Working knowledge of diesel truck operations, diesel engine, air brake, vehicle components and vehicle inspection.
  • Good driving record.
  • Current class A CDL license.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal regulations, safety practices.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to positively interact with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service, maintain customer confidence and protect operational integrity.
  • Ability to work with and provide customer service for diverse populations (faculty, staff, students, and general public).

EMPLOYMENT STATUS:

Full time position with comprehensive benefits program including health, dental, vision, life, and LTD insurance, a Section 125 plan for medical and dependent care expenses; personal and sick leave; and a choice of retirement programs—IPERS (defined benefit) or TIAA (defined contribution). Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s education and experience. Anticipated hours will be flexible including evenings.
