An astronaut becomes stranded on Mars and must rely on his ingenuity to survive and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Themes of The Martian include abandonment, sacrifice, tenacity, humanity, and loyalty. The Martian relates to the 2020-2021 institutional outcome which is based on the topics of quantitative reasoning, problem-solving, and logical thinking.
