Family Literacy Program

The Family Literacy Program provides parents enrolled at the Adult Learning Center with methods and resources to assist with children’s literacy development.

Students who are identified as parents or primary caregivers at registration are automatically scheduled for the Family Literacy program.

Participants have regular in-person or online sessions with the Parent Education Specialist during their English Language Learning or High School Completion classes.

These sessions are primarily focused on providing age-appropriate reading materials and lessons on how to best use them at home with children. Other topics covered include understanding school communications and navigating the Waterloo Schools online parent portal.

Free books, both English and bilingual in a variety of languages, are offered as part of the program. As part of a partnership with the Waterloo Public Library, eligible students are also able to check out a selection of bilingual books from the Adult Learning Center.
