A Smooth Transition From Military to College Student

We honor, welcome, and support you — our military service members, veterans, and families transitioning from military to college life. More than 200 military-connected students attend Hawkeye each semester. Several veterans serve as administration, faculty, and staff.

Getting Started: Your Welcome Checklist

Whether you’re new or coming back to school, there are a few things you need to do before you begin.

First off, it’s a good idea to chat with your Education Service Officer or counselor from your military service about your options before you enroll.

What to Expect with Billing and Payments

At the start of the semester, you’ll get a billing statement.

If you’re using Post 9/11 benefits or VA Vocational Rehabilitation, your tuition will be sent directly to the school. But if you’re not using those benefits, you’ll be responsible for paying your bill at Hawkeye.

With Post 9/11 or VA Vocational Rehabilitation, the school will receive your tuition and fees, but your housing allowance and book stipend will come to you directly. The housing allowance is paid monthly, and you’ll get the book stipend at the beginning of the semester.

  • Cohort Default Rate: This rate shows the percentage of students who default on federal student loans after starting to pay them back. You can ask the Veterans Services Office or Financial Aid Office for this info.

What is CHAMPVA?

The Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA) (CHAMPVA) is a comprehensive health care benefits program in which the VA shares the cost of covered health care services and supplies with eligible beneficiaries.

Starting or Maintaining CHAMPVA Benefits with Hawkeye Community College

You can start or keep your CHAMPVA benefits active with Hawkeye completely online. Just submit an Enrollment Verification Request. To start a request, click Add New Request and enter the information below:

Veterans Resource Center

Connect with people who share your experiences. The Veterans Resource Center is in the Brock Student Center and open during regular hours. Come enjoy a relaxed atmosphere to study and socialize.

Veterans Services Committee

The Veterans Services Committee is a group that includes student veterans, faculty, and staff. We meet every few months to talk about how we can improve things for students connected to the military. Our goal is to find the best ways to support you and make Hawkeye a better place for all military-connected students. We'd love your input!
