Newly-Renovated Grundy Hall Dedicated

Hawkeye Community College dedicated the newly-renovated Grundy Hall with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and public open house on Thursday, April 18.

"It is an exciting day as we dedicate our newly renovated Grundy Hall, not only because it marks the completion of a three-year construction project, but because of the impact Grundy Hall will have on the health of our community," said Dr. Todd Holcomb, President of Hawkeye Community College.

Grundy Hall’s $21 million renovation transformed the site into a state-of-the-art center for healthcare education focused on student collaboration and hands-on learning. Grundy Hall is the final project funded by the 2015 bond referendum approved in Hawkeye’s 10-county service region. The renovation expanded Hawkeye’s healthcare simulation space by 300%, increased dental clinic capacity by 25%, and increased student access to industry-relevant technology.

"Our simulation center will provide exceptional opportunities to experience real-life clinical scenarios in a safe learning environment," said Lynn LaGrone, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Hawkeye Community College. "Students will learn procedures, develop assessment skills, and advance their skills in direct patient care through the use of medical mannequins and patient simulation technology with supervision, guidance, and feedback from our experienced healthcare faculty."

The project was completed in two phases. The first phase expanded the Dental Clinic that serves as a learning lab for Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene students while serving more than 800 community members a year. The second phase completed renovation of the rest of the building, including expansion of science labs and simulation spaces, and the addition of a heated ambulance bay and student study spaces.

"Quality, accessible healthcare hinges on an empowered and sustained workforce," Holcomb said. "By providing our community with unmatched educational opportunities, we will help to keep youth in Iowa, upskill our existing workforce, and ensure a pipeline of highly skilled healthcare workers for years to come."
