Master Promissory Note

The Master Promissory Note (MPN) is a legal document in which you promise to repay your loan(s) and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education. It also explains the terms and conditions of your loan(s).

Parent PLUS Loan borrowers must complete a separate Master Promissory Note.

If you have previously completed the Master Promissory Note at another school, you are still required to complete the Master Promissory Note for Hawkeye Community College.

You must complete your Master Promissory Note before the first disbursement of your Federal Loans.

To complete your Master Promissory Note you will need:

  • Your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID to log-in.

    • Parent PLUS loan borrowers: The parent who applied for the loan must complete the Master Promissory Note using their (the parent) FSA ID.

  • To list Hawkeye Community College as the school name.

  • Approximately 30 minutes to complete the session. The Master Promissory Note must be completed in a single session so be sure you allow enough time.

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4.0 or higher.

  • Personal information such as your permanent and mailing address, phone number, email address, and alien registration number if you are an eligible non-citizen.

  • Employer information including your employer name and address.

  • Reference information for two people with different U.S. addresses who have known you for at least three years.

    • You will need the name, address, phone number, and your relationship to the reference for each person you list as a reference.

    • References are not co-signers of your Federal Direct Loans.

    • Student borrowers: The first reference should be a parent or legal guardian.

    • Parent PLUS loan Borrowers: You may not list the student for whom you are borrowing this loan as a reference.

  • Parent PLUS Loan borrowers will also need the following information about the student for whom the loan is being taken out:

    • Student's first name, middle initial, and last name.
    • Student's social security number.
    • Student's date of birth.
    • Student's address.
    • Student's phone number.

Print a copy of your completed Master Promissory Note for your records before exiting this website. You will know your session is complete once you see a "Congratulations" screen.  Hawkeye Community College will receive an electronic acknowledgment of its completion.

To start your Master Promissory Note go to studentaid.gov and click the "Log In" button.
