The Welcome Desk Student Worker position serves as the vital first point of contact for students, families, employees, and visitors entering the Hawkeye Center. This role is dedicated specifically to providing high-quality front desk coverage while maintaining a welcoming, professional, and student-centered environment. The primary objective is to enhance the overall visitor experience through proactive greeting, basic assistance, and clear campus wayfinding.

Responsibilities

  • Visitor Greeting: Welcoming students, families, employees, and visitors warmly as they enter the Hawkeye Center.
  • Check-In Assistance: Assisting with basic visitor check-in processes as needed.
  • Wayfinding & Directions: Providing basic directions and wayfinding assistance across the building and campus.
  • General Information: Answering foundational questions regarding office locations, operating hours, and general campus services.
  • Triage Support: Helping visitors identify and navigate to the correct department or service area.
  • Phone Operations: Answering basic phone inquiries and directing callers to the appropriate office when clear guidance is available.
  • Issue Escalation: Referring complex routing questions, institutional policy inquiries, or sensitive and confidential matters directly to professional staff.
  • Area Maintenance: Supporting basic front desk organization, cleanliness, and a professional, uncluttered appearance.
  • Interoffice Communication: Supporting communication and routing between the front desk and nearby administrative offices.

Required Qualifications

  • Student Status: Must be a current student at Hawkeye Community College enrolled in a minimum number of credit hours and eligible for the Federal Work-Study program.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to greet visitors warmly and provide clear, helpful directions.
  • Customer Service Orientation: A positive, welcoming attitude and a commitment to providing excellent service to students, staff, and campus guests.
  • Basic Problem-Solving: Ability to handle foundational questions, perform basic phone operations, and recognize when an issue needs to be escalated to professional staff.
  • Reliability & Professionalism: Dependable attendance, strong organizational skills to maintain front desk cleanliness, and adherence to the department dress code (including Hawkeye Community College apparel).
