If you're looking for a way to build your skills, make a difference, and get more involved on campus, the RedTails LEAD AmeriCorps program could be a great fit for you. LEAD stands for Learn, Educate, Accelerate, and Discover—and as a member, you'll do all four. You'll develop leadership skills, strengthen your communication abilities, and gain problem-solving experience that will benefit you beyond graduation.

RedTails LEAD members are students, interns, and recent graduates who are passionate about helping others succeed. In this role, you'll support fellow students by helping them navigate college, connect with campus resources, and stay on track toward their goals. You'll join a team dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive experience for everyone at Hawkeye.

No prior experience required. We're looking for people who show up, care about their community, and want to grow.

What You'll Do:

  • Help students find and access community resources that support their success
  • Guide students through applications and forms for programs like food assistance and LIHEAP
  • Connect students with off-campus resources, including local food banks and community organizations
  • Help students schedule appointments with healthcare providers and other service agencies
  • Assist students with transportation options and navigating community services
  • Build valuable communication, coordination, advocacy, and problem-solving skills through hands-on experience

In this role, you'll make a real difference by helping students overcome barriers outside the classroom so they can stay focused on reaching their educational goals. Along the way, you'll gain professional experience and develop skills that are valuable in a wide range of careers.

Become a Community Access Specialist

What You'll Do

  • Learn introductory construction skills and earn National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certification
  • Work on a community project that helps build or repair low-income housing
  • Get leadership experience and connect with potential employers
  • Support and mentor other students by sharing information about the WE Build program and helping them get involved

If you're interested in the trades, want to help others, or just want to try something new, this is a great way to build your future—while giving back.

What You'll Do

  • Serve at the Child Development Center at the Adult Learning Center in downtown Waterloo
  • Lead age-appropriate lessons and activities that support children's development
  • Help maintain a high-quality educational environment that aligns with the center's mission
  • Assist with preparing food for meals and classroom activities
  • Keep accurate records and support data tracking efforts

This is a great opportunity to build experience in child development, support local families, and make a real difference every day.

Become a Child Development Specialist

What You'll Do

  • Serve as a coach and mentor to students navigating their college journey
  • Help build a strong support system that connects students with the resources they need
  • Encourage students to stay engaged, take responsibility, and reach their milestones
  • Check in regularly to track progress, offer guidance, and help students stay motivated
  • Be someone they can count on—not just for advice, but for support and encouragement all the way to graduation

Be a Completion Coordinator

What You'll Do

  • Meet one-on-one with students to understand their needs and offer support
  • Help students connect with on-campus and community resources
  • Increase access to the campus food pantry by expanding locations and recruiting volunteers
  • Assist with organizing and leading volunteer-based service projects like food drives, recycling events, and community clean-ups

Become a Resource Ambassador

What You Can Expect as an AmeriCorps Member

As an AmeriCorps member, you'll gain valuable experience while making a difference in your community. You'll receive support, professional development opportunities, and benefits that help you grow personally and professionally throughout your service term.

As an AmeriCorps member, you'll have opportunities to grow your skills, connect with others, and build your leadership experience. You will:

  • Participate in professional development opportunities and training.
  • Work with a diverse team of staff, AmeriCorps members, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Receive mentorship from Hawkeye Community College academic leaders.

AmeriCorps members may receive:

  • A $1,500 education award after successfully completing your service term. You may earn up to $14,000 by serving multiple terms.
  • A living allowance of at least $3,708 for your service term. Paid in twice-monthly installments throughout your term of service.
  • Student loan forbearance and eligible loan interest payments.
  • Time off for Hawkeye-recognized holidays and campus closures. On Employee Development Day, you'll have the opportunity to participate in professional development alongside Hawkeye employees.

To serve as an AmeriCorps member, you must:

  • Have or be working toward a high school diploma, GED, or HSED.
  • Be at least 17 years old when you begin your service term.
  • Pass a national service criminal history check before your first day.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident.
  • Be able to work with people from different backgrounds.
  • Communicate effectively with others through speaking and writing.
