Hawkeye Community College Earns "Best for Vets" Rating from Military Times

We made the list! Best for Vets: Colleges 2023 posted on Tuesday, November 7, 2023 in  College News

WATERLOO–Hawkeye Community College’s ongoing commitment to veterans and military-connected students has once again earned it a place on the Best for Vets: Colleges list curated by Military Times, the largest and most comprehensive annual ranking of schools for military service members and veterans.

Each year, the Best for Vets survey is sent to colleges and universities across the nation asking about their programs for veterans. The survey results are then analyzed, along with public data about colleges and universities obtained from the Department of Education and Department of Veterans Affairs, and turned into an official ranking. Schools were asked to complete the survey earlier this year and the responses were then analyzed by the Military Times data team, producing the highly anticipated, respected, and unbiased annual ranking.

This year, 325 schools made the list, which can be viewed at

“Our comprehensive survey and thoughtful methodology make our rankings best in class,” said Mike Gruss, editor-in-chief at Sightline Media Group, parent company of Military Times.

For 10 years, Military Times Best for Vets: Colleges has served and supported the military community through its trusted ranking and reporting on the top schools for veterans. The rankings have become a go-to resource for schools to spread the word about their veteran programs and help veterans make important decisions about their educational planning and how to use the education benefits they earned through military service.

Hawkeye has been at the forefront of addressing military students’ needs for many years. Hawkeye’s Military and Veterans Services office includes a full-time coordinator and resource center providing veterans with a central point of contact for determining funding and resources.

Hawkeye has many resources for veterans, including a personalized approach to transitioning into the academic environment, tutoring, and campus-based disability and counseling services. A Veterans Services Committee composed of staff, faculty members, and student-veterans meets quarterly to evaluate and recommend best practices and innovation to better serve our military-connected students. The Student Veterans of America Hawkeye Chapter actively supports service projects, social activities, and community events throughout the year.
