Hundreds of Volunteers Needed for Upcoming “Free Dental Clinic”

The first of its kind in Iowa - expected to serve 1,000 patients at Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center

WATERLOO – Organizers of the Iowa Mission of Mercy are calling on Iowa dentists, assistants, hygienists, and members of the general public to volunteer their time and expertise to help serve the expected 1,000 patients seeking no-cost dental treatment Friday, October 3, and Saturday, October 4, at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo.

"This is our first "Mission of Mercy" for Iowa, and we need a significant contingent of volunteers to successfully treat as many patients as we can in those two days," said Waterloo dentist Dr. Martin Averill, Iowa Mission of Mercy Local Steering Committee Chair. "We have many dental professionals who have already signed up, yet we need more of our colleagues to ensure we do our best to meet demand."

Volunteer opportunities are not limited to dental professionals. Members of the general public are also encouraged to sign-up for six-hour shifts at www.IowaMOM.org. Volunteers will be asked to join one of seven teams: Dental, Patient and Volunteer Management, Facilities, Operations, Medical, Hospitality/Food Service, and Education.

"There is plenty of work to go around – we need patient escorts, bilingual volunteers, clean-up crews, and much more," said Dr. Averill. "In what's been a challenging year for Iowa, this is a unique opportunity to experience great personal reward for giving back to the community and helping fellow Iowans take care of their oral health needs at no cost."

Six-hour volunteer shifts are available during set up on Thursday, October 2, Mission of Mercy on October 3-4, and tear down on Sunday, October 5. More information is available at www.IowaMOM.org or by calling 1-877-513-8966, extension 5019.

The Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center will be transformed into a large field dental clinic for the two days of Iowa Mission of Mercy. Patients will receive needed dental treatment at no cost.
