About the Library

The Hawkeye Community College Library is located on the main college campus at 1501 East Orange Road, Waterloo, Iowa. The Library is located in the lower level of the Library Building, which is adjacent to Hawkeye Center.


Use of the Hawkeye Community College Library

The Hawkeye Community College Library is open to the students, faculty, and staff of Hawkeye Community College and to the general public. A Hawkeye Community College ID is necessary to check out materials. Members of the public may check out through the Iowa Open Access program.

The Library Collection

The collection contains over 32,000 volumes, 1,800 videos, 12 newspapers and 500 magazines and journals. Seventeen online databases, many including full text of periodical articles and books, support student and staff research.

The library has 22 computer workstations available for library research. An additional 13 wireless laptops are available for use anywhere in the library, and 12 laptops are available to checkout for home use for up to one week. A library classroom with 21 computers is available for library instruction.

Cedar Valley Library Consortium

Hawkeye Community College Library, University of Northern Iowa Rod Library, Cedar Falls Public Library, Waterloo Public Library, and Allen College Library are members of the Cedar Valley Library Consortium. The Consortium shares technology to produce a single online public access catalog of the libraries' holdings. Holdings may be searched for each individual library or as the entire consortium.

Library Card & Borrowing Privileges

  • Hawkeye Community College Students

    • Your Hawkeye Community College photo ID (Hawkeye Card) is your library checkout card.
    • You must always present your Hawkeye Card to check out library materials, to use items from the Reserve Collection, or to do interlibrary loan.
    • You are responsible for all items checked out on your Hawkeye Card. If you check items out for other people, you will be charged the fines if the items are not returned.
  • Hawkeye Community College faculty and staff

    • Your Hawkeye Community College ID is your library card.
  • General Public

    • The general public can check out most library materials from the Hawkeye Community College Library through Iowa's Open Access program. A Hawkeye Community College Library bar code will be affixed to the patron's public library card or a Hawkeye Community College Library card will be issued.
    • Please present a photo ID
    • Borrowing privileges for the general public do not include use of reserve materials, interlibrary loan service, remote access to licensed electronic resources or checkout of videos. Members of the general public may view videos in the library.

Loan Periods and Fines

Most library materials can be checked out, and in most cases there is no limit on the number of items you can check out at one time. You must have your Hawkeye Card with you for checkout. Note the chart below for specific loan periods.

A Word about Fines

Library fines exist only to encourage timely return of library materials. Although Hawkeye Community College’s fines are modest, over a period of several days, fines do mount up especially if you have several items overdue.

Reserve items and videos carry higher fines because these are items that are often required reading or viewing that must be available for many users. See the chart below for specific fines.

Renewals

There are three ways to renew library materials:

  1. In person at the Circulation Desk: simply present your Hawkeye Card. You do not have to bring the items to the Library.
  2. By telephone: 296-4006. You will be asked for your name and either your Hawkeye Card number or library barcode number.
  3. Online: My Library Account
    • Enter your last name
    • Hawkeye students, faculty, and staff: enter you Hawkeye ID number found on the back of your Hawkeye Card
    • Visitors: enter the 14 digit number from your Hawkeye library card.

    Once you are logged in you can...

    • edit your personal information
    • view items currently checked out
    • renew items currently checked out

    NOTE

    • Items may only be renewed once
    • Overdue items may not be renewed
    • Videos and reserve items may not be renewed
    • If another student has placed a hold on an item, you will not be able to renew it

    If your item does not renew, please call the Library at 319-296-4006.

Holds

You may request that an item that is checked out be held for your use when it is returned to the Library. The online library catalog will indicate when an item is due to be returned. The staff at the Circulation Desk will place the hold for you.

Faculty reserve items cannot be placed on hold.

In addition, items with the location of "HCC In Processing" in the online library catalog can be requested at the Circulation Desk. These are new library materials that are not on the shelves yet. Please allow at least 24 hours for the item(s) to be processed for your use.

Course Reserves

Supplemental course material may be placed on reserve at the Hawkeye Community College Library for one or more classes by students or faculty.

Lost & Damaged Materials

Unfortunately, library materials sometimes are lost or damaged. The person who checked out the items will be billed the replacement cost for each lost or damaged book and video. Periodicals are assessed at $10.00 per issue.

Library checkout privileges are suspended until library bills are paid. In addition, you will not be able to receive a transcript of your classes until this bill is paid in full.
