The EHC² program offers you an opportunity to explore a career in nursing and healthcare. Beginning the summer following your junior year, you will begin college courses and continue taking college courses through the spring or summer of your senior year. During the summer following your junior year, you will participate in a six-week internship, complete a college course, and earn $300 and another $300 to be placed in an educational account for your future tuition. You will then participate in 180 hours of paid work experience and complete two college courses during your senior year. If you plan on attending Hawkeye, you will take three college classes and participate in another six-week internship the summer after your senior year. If you plan on attending Allen College, you will participate in the six-week internship and take one college class the summer after your senior year. During this time you will earn $300 for yourself and another $300 will be placed in an educational account for your tuition.
This program allows you to enter the nursing program at either Hawkeye Community College or Allen College with a semester of college credit.
You must be a junior in high school and have taken the ACT or COMPASS test (recommend taking in fall of junior year.) You must have completed courses in biology and algebra with a C or better and a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA 1) course.
You are responsible for the cost of travel, food, and uniforms for the work and education experiences. You are also responsible for the cost of the CNA course, which must be completed before you begin the program. Depending on your high school, you may be required to pay a small portion of the cost for the coursework.
