How do I apply for admission to Hawkeye Community College?

Submit an application for the desired program or the transfer division. A high school transcript or GED scores and/or college transcripts should be sent to Hawkeye. Once a transcript has been received, you will be notified about a preview session and any basic skills assessment (COMPASS) that may be required for course placement. You will be notified of acceptance usually within two weeks after the application process is completed.

Is Hawkeye on a quarter or semester system?

A semester system. All programs are on a semester system. Fall Semester begins in August. Spring Semester begins in January. Summer session begins in June. There are two 4-week sessions and one 8-week session during the summer.

Are ACT scores required for admission?

If you are still in high school, we suggest that you take the ACT. You may decide to attend college elsewhere later where the test may be required for admission, and your basic skills assessment (COMPASS) may be waived at Hawkeye with adequate ACT scores.

How much should I budget for housing and food?

Roughly $300-$500 per month for a single person for room and board no matter where you stay.

How many hours per day will I attend classes?

Most full-time students can on count three to five hours per day, five days a week. The majority of Applied Science and Technology programs run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but each class schedule varies depending on the program or major in which you are enrolling. Transfer students schedules can vary greatly. Classes are offered weekends, morning, afternoon, and evening. You will receive information about registering your classes 2 to 3 months before class begins.

What is registration and when does it take place?

New student enrollment is completed during the month before your classes begin. At this time, payment in full of your first term's tuition, supplies and fees or confirmed financial assistance is required. For other payment plans, contact the Business Office. Completion of enrollment (registration and payment) reserves a place for you in your classes. Part-time day, evening, and weekend enrollment is available.

When are books, supplies and tools purchased?

Books and supplies are usually purchased before the first day of classes. If tools and equipment are necessary, you may wish to consult either your instructor or academic department chair.

What are my housing options?

You have many housing options in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area. If you're looking for a convenient location, Hawkeye Village and Hawkeye Towers are right next to our main campus. (Both are independently owned and operated.) If you want a traditional dormitory experience, the University of Northern Iowa residence halls are available to Hawkeye Students. Contact Admssions for more information about Hawkeye apartments and UNI residence halls. You can also choose from the dozens of apartments, duplexes, and houses in our regularly updated Housing List, available from the Student Life Office.

Are the programs offered at Hawkeye approved for veterans' benefits under the GI bill?

All programs and majors are approved for veterans' benefits except Nursing Assistant/Orderly and other Open Campus non-credit courses.

Yes, Metropolitan buses have scheduled routes to the Hawkeye campus.

Are part-time jobs available for students?

Part-time work-study jobs are available on campus for students who qualify for financial aid. Other part-time or full-time positions are posted in each department area and are also on file in the Graduate Employment Services Office and the Human Resources Office.

What type of financial aid is available?

Financial aid is applied for on a fiscal year (July 1 to June 30) basis and is based on need. Some forms of aid are the Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, College Work-Study, Iowa Vocational-Technical Tuition Grant, Iowa Work Study Program and Student Loans. Over 70% of our students obtain some form of financial aid.

Are Hawkeye credits transferable to another college?

Hawkeye is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, and all of our Arts and Sciences credits will transfer to a four-year college. You should write to the particular college you're interested in and request an evaluation of your Applied Science and Technology credits at Hawkeye Community College. It is up to the other college to decide whether or not to accept credits earned at Hawkeye.

Are part-time courses available at Hawkeye? Can I enroll on a part-time basis?

You can enroll part-time in day, evening, and weekend classes. Class schedules are available about three months before the term begins.

When should I start looking for housing?

A list of rooms in private homes (and apartments) is compiled every few weeks. If you want a copy of this list, contact the Enrollment Management Center at Hawkeye. You may also wish to obtain a copy of the Waterloo Courier and refer to the classified ads.
