COURSE DESCRIPTION: This telecourse introduces students to the study of an increasingly influential segment of our society, the elderly. The course will provide an understanding of the process of aging, old age as a stage of life, and the impact of aging on society. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. To acquaint the student with the
fundamental concepts/principles of social gerontology .2. To understand the scientific basis of the sociopsychological
study of aging (introduce the scientific method). 3. To introduce the student to the major
substantive areas of inquiry within social gerontology 4. To
overview the theoretical approaches/paradigms used within aging research 5. To provide a foundation for further study
in social gerontology .6. To introduce the student to the empirical philosophy
and conceptual issues of social gerontology (both American and cross-cultural)
so that the student can develop an understanding of the breadth and complexity
of this expanding field of inquiry. COURSE FORMAT: This is a telecourse
offered by Iowa Public Television (IPTV)/Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) in association with Hawkeye Community College
(HCC). The telecourse consists of thirteen
one-hour television programs
accompanied by a textbook assignment and a chapter in the Study Guide. The Study Guide contains the “recipe” that
will direct you, step-by-step, through each of the programs in the telecourse. During the telecourse,
you will take four examinations. The ‘study guide’ exercises, together with the
textbook readings and television programs, provide the necessary foundation to
begin the four essay examinations.
Please note your study guide for outline of the text readings necessary
for the tests. Assignments (other than
assignment one of contact information) are not turned in.
TEXTBOOK AND STUDY GUIDE: THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT THE HCC BOOKSTORE HAS THE CORRECT TEXT/STUDY GUIDE. Four tests will be administered during the course. The tests will be open-book
in nature and essay in format. Open-book tests often require you to seek
information beyond the text/study guide/braodcast. It
will not be necessary for the tests to
be proctored. THE TESTS
MAY NOT EXACTLY LINE UP WITH THE PROGRAMS/TEXT. IF IN DOUBT, SKIP THE TEST QUESTION AND
WAIT FOR A LATER BROADCAST. It is difficult to have all test questions
line up exactly with broadcasts/text as programs and texts change frequently. Please note the Study Guide which specify
the text readings to be read prior to undertaking the tests. You will need
to have viewed the appropriate TV programs, read the text chapter, and
completed the study guide assignments before undertaking the test. The
tests will include directions for
completion and are self-paced. I do note
that you should complete and send them in
a timely fashion so as not to be rushed at the end of the course. Tests
will cover the textbook, the study guide assignments, and the programs. You may need to
supplement your video viewing and textbook with internet research in order to
fully complete the test.
It is noted that at least 5-7 pages of work is required in order to do each
test. This is a MINIMUM. GRADING: Final grades
will be based on total points on all exams/assignments. Each exam = 25%
(N.B.‑‑assignments, if any, will be weighted as
announced.) The final grade distribution
will approximate: A = 90% and
above D = 60% ‑ 69%

C = 70% ‑ 79

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to Psychology is an introductory
psychology
course that explores human behavior and mental processes. The
series will introduce
you to the leading reseachers and the
latest developments in the field, from the
structure and function of the brain to the newest ways of treating
depression and
schizophrenia. Along the way you will discover how psychologists
investigate human
nature as they strive to unravel the mysteries of why we act,
think and feel the way we
do. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS COURSE ENDS
AS OF DECEMBER 1, 2006. TESTS
SHOULD BE IN MY OFFICE PRIOR TO THIS DATE.
COURSE FORMAT: This is a telecourse
offered by Iowa Public Television (IPTV) in

half-hour television programs accompanied by a textbook
assignment and a chapter in
the Study Guide. The
Study Guide contains the recipe that will direct you,

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The world of abnormal psychology explores the
complex causes, manifestations, and treatments of common behavior disorders.
Looks at mental health issues from the patient’s perspective as well as
analysis from the therapist or other health care professional. An introduction
to psychopathology.

FORMAT: This is a telecourse offered by Iowa Public Television (IPTV) in
association with
one hour television programs
accompanied by a textbook assignment and a chapter in
the Study Guide. The Study Guide contains the recipe that will
direct you,
step-by-step, through each of
the programs in the telecourse. During the telecourse,
you will complete and send in
the four examinations. It is very helpful if you complete
all of the assignments in the

administered during the course. Tests only are used for course grade. Open-book tests

will be open-book in nature and essay in format. It is noted that at
least 5-7 pages of work is required in order to do each test. This is a
MINIMUM. It will not be necessary
for the tests to be proctored. Tests are attached to this packet and include
instructions for completion. Test 1 will
cover modules 1-3; test 2 will cover
4-6; test 3 will cover 7-9 and test 4 will cover modules 10-13. You will need to have viewed the appropriate
TV programs, read the text chapter, and completed the study guide assignments
before undertaking the test. THE TESTS
MAY NOT EXACTLY LINE UP WITH THE PROGRAMS/TEXT . IF IN DOUBT, SKIP THE TEST
QUESTION AND WAIT FOR A LATER BROADCAST.
It is difficult to have all test questions line up exactly with

This telecourse introduces students to the
study of an increasingly influential segment of our society, the elderly. The
course will provide an understanding of the process of aging, old age as a
