Principles of Macroeconomics

Course Description: Principles of supply and demand and the price mechanism will be presented. Descriptions and interactions of the consumer, business, government, and international sectors will be studied as well as their effects on output, employment, and growth in the economy. The course includes a study of the banking system and monetary policy, fiscal policy, economic growth, differing macroeconomics viewpoints, and international issues.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course the student will have a fundamentally understand the principles of macroeconomics providing a bases for his or her decisions as those decisions relate to economic forces, political and legal forces, social and historical forces both domestically and internationally. The course covers scarcity; supply and demand; economic systems; determine what, how, and for whom to produce; determine the sources of unemployment and inflation; analyze the interaction of aggregate supply and aggregated demand; demonstrate an understanding of the banking system and its role in the economy; and identify the major economic theories.

Learning Activities: The activities of this class may include lectures, class and small group discussion, video tapes, web sites, text reading, tests, quizzes, and written assignments.

Grading: You will be evaluated on the basis of exams, quizzes, and other required class assignments. There will be five exams during the semester and a yet to be determined number of quizzes. Exam dates will be announced in class. You will be allowed to drop on exam and one quiz. The dropped exam is one missed exam or quiz or the lowest scored exam or quiz. All take home exams or quizzes are due at the next class meeting. Late submissions are considered dropped. Twenty-five percent of you total class score is based on quiz points and seventy five percent is exam points. Your final grade will be determined by the cumulative number of points applied to the following scale: 90-100=A; 80-89=B; 70-79=C; 60-69=D; below 60=F.

Attendance, Advice and Assistance: Class attendance is taken daily. There is a correlation between class attendance and success in this course. You are responsible for material covered in the textbook and in class discussion. Try to keep up—the best way to learn is a little at a time. Don’t wait until the night before an exam to start reading. Get help when you need it. It is you are responsibility to learn the materials. Tutors and other assistance can be arranged if needed. You are responsible for your learning.

Extra Credit: None allowed

CANCELLED CLASSES: Class meetings occasionally can be called off due to bad weather, a college closing, or a teacher absence. Students should know that in any cancelled class situation, deadlines for tests, papers, projects, ect., will be in effect for the next scheduled class date unless told otherwise by the instructor. Please refer to you Student Handbook regarding temporary school closing.

ORAL COMPETENCY: Hawkeye Community College’s policy states that the oral competency (speaks English clearly) of an instructor will be evaluated by students at the end of each academic term. A minimum of one class per term will be asked to complete an oral competency evaluation per instructor. If you have concern about the oral communication skills of your instructor, you are encouraged to contact the department head or appropriate dean.
