Course #009822, Ynrsgn103 Expanded I.V. Therapy for Nurses
Purpose: This course is designed to prepare the LPN and RN to perform procedures related to the expanded scope of intravenous therapy in a licensed hospital, skilled nursing facility or a certified end-stage renal dialysis unit. This course is also open to RNs who wish to increase their I.V. skills.
Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Summarize the major legal implications of I.V. therapy relative to the Iowa Code.
- Select I.V. devices used in administering I.V. solutions and drugs, the criteria for their usage, precautions, complications of each, and documentation.
- Select a peripheral vein used for venipuncture.
- Perform nursing responsibilities in preparation for and during venipuncture, maintenance and care of the client with an I.V. infusion in simulated and clinical sites.
- Demonstrate the principles of infection control.
- Manage I.V. therapy to decrease the risk of complications.
- Summarize the fundamentals of fluid and electrolyte metabolism.
- Analyze the major drugs used I.V., precautions, dose and effects, rate of infusion, side effects, compatibility, preparation, and administrations.
