Purpose: The activity programs in long term care facilities fulfill a vital role in assisting residents to maintain normal lifestyles. This program has been developed to provide the knowledge and help to develop the skills needed by activity coordinators to design effective programs. Students will be expected to complete a project in a care facility as part of the course.

Objectives: At the end of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Define the role of the activity coordinator in a long term care facility as identified by job descriptions, State rules and regulations and ethical considerations.
  2. Demonstrate skills in resident assessment, planning resident activities, and managing an activity department.
  3. Identify the types of residents in long term care facilities given the individuality of each resident and the special problems each type might encounter.
  4. Demonstrate proper written documentation on resident's chart that meets the requirements set by State and Federal Regulations/Guidelines.
  5. Demonstrate appropriate planning and implementation of activities through a special activity project.

***Tuition must be paid 48 hours before the first class session. A $15.00 late fee will be assessed after that. If you register and are unable to attend, and notify Hawkeye Community College 48 hour prior to the first class session a full refund will be made. There will be no refunds otherwise.
