Hawkeye Community College online classes allow enrolled students to use the internet to display the syllabus, course content, and assignments. Course requirements will vary with the topic, but readings from both textbooks and web sources may be required. Online courses usually follow a semester time frame, but your weekly work, email, and discussion can occur any time, day, or night. Testing may occur online in a format determined by the instructor. Textbooks may be purchased through the college bookstore or ordered by phone.

Online classes require:

  • A computer: 200MHz or better (Mac or Windows)
  •
  • Internet connection: 28.8 modem or faster (some courses that are more graphic intense will be better viewed with a cable modem or DSL connection)
  •
  • Web Browser: Netscape or Internet Explorer 4.0 or newer
  •
  • An email address (provided by Hawkeye)
  •
  • Certain software or viewers, such as MS Word or Power Point, may be required.

  • Tuition Costs: Most online classes are the same as those for classes offered at Hawkeye. Students enrolled in online coursework also abide by the same rules governing late registration, drops, and withdrawals.

Out of state students: Tuition is the same for out-of-state or international students as for in-state students (Iowa). All enrolled students are subject to mandatory student fees and the online course fee.

Financial Aid: Online students may apply for financial aid, and information is available from Hawkeye’s Financial Aid office upon request. In general, the same regulations for Financial Aid apply to distance learning students as to on-campus students.

Getting Started: Once enrolled in an online course, you will receive a Welcome Letter with instructions on how to access your course. Please read this letter carefully and follow the directions according to the Learner Management System used.

To log into your course, go to the ANGEL Learning Management System. Here you can login to your course, and see general announcements and resources.

Exploring the Course: You may explore the course by going to the Launch Pad. If your online course is in Blackboard, you will have to have a User ID and password. Log in to the course using the instructions in the Welcome Letter. After logging in, you may review the syllabus, assignments, and instructor expectations. If your course is Publisher Based, such as Pearson’s CourseCompas, you will need to purchase an Access Code Packet with your textbook from the Hawkeye Bookstore. Or if you use McGraw-Hill’s PageOut, you will need to "Register" on the Publisher site after you log into your course--just follow the directions.
