Peer Tutoring

What is a peer tutor?

A peer tutor is a student who can tutor in a content area course/discipline area and can model good study skills and habits. The student you receive as a peer tutor is currently taking (and receiving an A or B grade) or has successfully completed (with an A or B grade) the course in which you need assistance.

Who qualifies to receive peer tutoring?

Any student who is receiving a D or F grade in a content area course can be matched with a peer tutor if there is not a professional tutor who can tutor in that subject area.

How do I get a peer tutor?

  1. Go to the Peer Tutoring coordinator, Dawn Hovey, or the ASC secretary, Judi Neuverth, to request an application.
  2. Take the application to your instructor for approval.
  3. Return the application to the ASC where it will be given to the peer tutor coordinator who will match you with a tutor.

What if I am not eligible for a peer tutor but still need help?

Many academic problems students encounter can be solved by working with our Study Skills tutors. As students strengthen study skills and habits, they find many subjects easier to master. Our study skills instructors can help in the following areas:

  • Time Management
  • Reading a Textbook
  • Preparing for a Test or Quiz
  • Effective Note Taking
  • Effective Listening
  • Proof Reading

You may also find our How-To Handouts beneficial. Review these guides to help strengthen your study skills.

How do I become a peer tutor?

  1. Complete a content area course with a grade of an A or a B.
  2. Pick up a peer tutoring application in the ASC or download the application online and apply to tutor in that subject. You must submit a signature, as a recommendation, from an instructor in the course/discipline area in which you want to tutor.
  3. Submit the completed application to the ASC.
  4. Attend and successfully complete the peer tutor training sessions.
