WATERLOO—Dr. Greg Schmitz is announcing his resignation as President of Hawkeye Community College to assume VGM Group Inc.’s newly created position of President of VGM Education. VGM Group, Inc. is located in Waterloo and includes 15 companies, the majority of which are related to the home medical equipment industry.

Dr. Schmitz, a native of Raymond, Iowa, was named President in 2005. Prior to serving as President, Dr. Schmitz served as Hawkeye’s Vice President of Administration and Finance.

“It has been a privilege to work under the leadership and support of the College Trustees and alongside my colleagues. While this opportunity unexpectedly came to me, I know it comes at a time when Hawkeye is well-positioned to meet increased student enrollment and the needs of our businesses and communities,” Schmitz said.

Under his leadership, Hawkeye formulated a new strategic plan and advanced its academic quality improvement priorities. In addition, the College continues to serve a record number of students with increased course offerings and outreach centers.

“Dr. Schmitz has been a tremendous asset to Hawkeye over the last nine years. His leadership and expertise has strengthened the College in every way imaginable – especially during challenging times and an economic downturn. Unfortunately for the College, someone of Greg’s caliber is recognized and in demand and the public sector cannot compete with the private sector which has more flexibility in recruiting such talent. We wish him nothing but the best with this professional opportunity. We’re pleased that he will remain in the Cedar Valley,” said Mark Birdnow, Chair of Hawkeye’s Board of Trustees.

The Board of Trustees will act as quickly as practical on naming an interim President.
