Program Overview

When you choose to study Secondary Education at Hawkeye, you'll enjoy a high-quality education at an affordable cost.

The Secondary Education transfer program helps you build a strong foundation for your teaching career. Dive into essential concepts and best practices for 7–12 education while balancing program-specific courses with general education classes.

Develop and expand the knowledge and skills you'll take into the field as a future teacher, such as:

  • Apply theories and principles of educational psychology to the learning process
  • Analyze the classroom strategies in the process of planning in the teaching field
  • Describe methods and models for effective teaching
  • Communicate effectively and think critically

Level One Field Experiences

Start building confidence as a future teacher right away. Your courses include a blend of lecture and application.

You'll have plenty of hands-on, experiential learning opportunities, such as level one field experiences. These real-world experiences are integral to developing the practical skills and knowledge you'll need to succeed as an educator.

In the second year of this program, you'll go out into the classrooms and begin active level one observations with cooperating teachers.

Teaching Portfolio

You will develop a portfolio of teaching strategies and tools. Prepare lesson plans, activity packets, teaching aides, and more.

Classroom Technology

Experience the technology of the modern-day classroom, including electronic assessment practices and interactive technology on whiteboards, iPads, and laptops.

With additional education, here are some of the careers in this field:

  • Middle school or high school teacher
  • Principal
  • School Psychologist
  • Curriculum Designer
  • Instructional Coach

Your AA in Secondary Education is designed to transfer because you will need to complete at least a bachelor's degree to become a teacher. We help make transferring as easy as possible.

An articulation agreement is a formal partnership between Hawkeye and another college or university that helps make sure the classes you take count toward your transfer.

Hawkeye holds articulation agreements in education at the University of Northern Iowa (Cedar Falls) and Upper Iowa University (Fayette and Waterloo).

" I just thought Hawkeye was perfect. With smaller class sizes, you have the chance to build those relationships with your professors and your peers. I would 100% recommend Hawkeye. "
