Acceptable English Language Proof for Admission

International students from countries where English is not a native language must provide ONE of the following forms of English Language Assessment for admission to Hawkeye:

• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 500 on the paper-based TOEFL (61-iBT).

  Request ETS to send your official TOEFL results to Hawkeye Community College’s Admissions office; our institutional code is 6288.

• International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum overall band score (academic track) of 6.0.

• Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) with a grade of A or B.

• Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) with a grade of A or B.

• Duolingo English Test with a minimum score of 90

• Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) with a minimum score of 80.

• Advanced Placement International English Language (APIEL) with a score of 4 or 5.

• General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCE A-level) with a pass in English with a grade of A, B, or C from one of the five British-based examining boards.

• Accuplacer Assessment: Writing—Sentence Skills score of 82 and Reading score of 76 or equivalent college coursework.

• ACT Assessment with an English test minimum score of 19.

• SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 510.

• International Baccalaureate (IB) with a grade of 4, 5, 6, or 7 in English A1 or A2 at the Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL).

• PTE Academic/PTE Online, must earn a 45.

• Completed Level 7 of the University of Northern Iowa’s Culture and Intensive English Program (CIEP) with recommendation from the Director of CIEP.

• Completed one semester of college level English composition from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university with a minimum grade of C.

• Completed one semester of college level English composition course (face-to-face) and a college level reading course (face-to-face) from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university with a minimum grade of C.

• Accuplacer Next Gen Assessment scores of Writing 253-300 and Reading 251-300.

These requirements will be waived only after Hawkeye Community College has received and evaluated an official transcript from the issuing institution.
