Care Team

Resources & Support for Students in Need

The Care Team is a resource to help students who may be facing challenges but aren’t in immediate danger. We step in to offer support, connect students with resources, and follow up to ensure things are improving. If you’re concerned about a student, referring them to the Care Team is an important first step.

If it’s an emergency, call 911. For on-campus emergencies, contact Public Safety.

  1. A referral is submitted by someone concerned about a student.
  2. The Care Team meets to assess the student’s situation and needs.
  3. They reach out to the student to offer support and create a plan of action.
  4. The team follows up with faculty or staff when appropriate.
  5. Support continues until the student’s concerns are resolved.

Identifying a student in need early can make a big difference. Early referrals allow the Care Team to step in, connect the dots among shared concerns, and provide the right support before a situation worsens.

If you're worried about a student's mental or physical well-being but there’s no immediate threat of harm, submitting a Care Team referral is the right step.

Anyone can refer an active student. Please report concerns such as:

  • Physical or mental health concerns
  • Suicidal thoughts (without immediate danger)
  • Noticeable changes in mood or behavior
  • Disturbing or concerning speech or writing
  • Direct or indirect threats to others
  • Situations that feel off, even if you’re unsure why
  • Signs of distress or struggling

Trust your instincts—if something doesn’t seem right, it’s worth reporting.

Signs of a Distressed Student

These can all be signs of distress in students. This is not a comprehensive list, but a reference. If you’re concerned about a student based on a “gut-feeling” and they don’t exhibit the indicators below, please file a Care Team referral.

  • Changes in mood or behavior
  • Excessive tearfulness
  • Panicked reactions
  • Irritability
  • Unusual apathy or withdrawn behavior
  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Hopelessness
  • Statements indicating troubles or reaching out for assistance

  • Sudden decline in quality of work
  • Sudden, concerning absences
  • Disturbing content in speech or writing

  • Worrisome changes in physical appearance: grooming, weight loss/gain, bruises or marks
  • Intoxication or hangovers
  • Disoriented

  • Implied or direct threats to harm self or others
  • Excessive anger

Frequently Asked Questions About Referrals

The Care Team strives to maintain student privacy. When instances of sexual misconduct, harm to self, or harm to others are present, the Care Team is required to report to the appropriate office.

Submitting an anonymous concern makes it harder for the college to fully investigate and help students who may need support. We ask that you fill out all parts of the referral form as completely as you can.

It's not required, but it can be helpful to tell the student you're referring them. This way, they know to expect support and can be ready for it.

Referring someone to the Care Team helps us connect the student to support. These connections focus on their education, wellness, and safety. This is not a punishment system.

The Care Team will only contact you if needed. If you have more information about the student and want to update the Care Team, please submit another referral with the new details.
