Resources and Support for Remote / Online Teaching and Learning

Hawkeye Community College provides the following resources and support to facilitate online teaching and learning. Many of these will be useful to faculty, staff, and students as the college responds to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Face-to-face instruction is moving online as able beginning Monday, March 23. Some classes may need to extend times when face-to-face instruction resumes.

Many staff will also begin working remotely, providing student services via phone, email, Zoom or other means.

Canvas Learning Management System (LMS)

Canvas is the supported learning management system for the college. All credit courses have a Canvas shell where instructors post the syllabus, announcements, and maintain a gradebook. Online courses also use Modules to structure course content incorporating pages, files, discussions, assignments, and quizzes. Canvas 24/7 Support is available to students and instructors with searchable guides, phone, and chat options in the Help menu of Canvas.

Training and Support:

Panopto

Panopto is a user-friendly and flexible video capture and streaming solution that empowers instructors and students to enhance learning through the use of video. Panopto is licensed for everyone at Hawkeye and is great for asynchronous teaching and learning. A Panopto integration exists in every Canvas course shell. Instructors just need to activate it in their course settings (navigation tab).

Training and Support:

Zoom

Zoom is a cloud-based video conferencing tool that facilitates remote meetings and can be used to meet with students or colleagues. The college has unlimited basic accounts allowing anyone to host up to 40-minute meetings. A limited number of licensed accounts are also available for those that need to host longer meetings.

Training and Support:

Google G-Suite

Hawkeye students, faculty, and staff have Gmail and Google Calendar, but G-Suite also provides access to other Google Apps including Drive, Documents, Sheets, Slides, Forms, and Google Hangouts for video conferencing.
