Engineering and Technology Liberal Arts Area of Interest

If you find technology fascinating and have a knack for math, then an engineering or physics degree may be right for you. Engineering professions allow you to utilize your skills in the solution of technical problems in order to help improve peoples' lives. Engineering students who graduate with an excellent GPA are highly employable and make some of the largest salaries directly out of college. Programs exist for physics and engineering double majors and graduate study may further enhance career opportunities.

Many scholarship and grant opportunities are available for this dynamic major through STEM initiatives (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).

If you are interested in completing a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physics you should consider taking 12 credit hours from the courses listed below as part of your AS degree in Liberal Arts.

In addition to the AS degree in Liberal Arts for pre-Engineering, Hawkeye also offers an associate degree in Electronics Engineering Technology which can lead to a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology. Students are advised to meet with their advisor to discuss which options best meet their needs as a student and future employee.

Career Opportunities

There is a significant need for Science and Engineering majors in our state and nation. Besides being a Physicist or Engineer, other careers are also open to students with Physics and Engineering degrees.

Some of these careers require further years of study beyond the four-year bachelor’s degree.

  • Engineering—with numerous specialties
  • Teaching
  • Scientific research
  • Medicine
  • Law
  • Environmental

Engineering is not just a single field. Engineering students choose an area of engineering specialization for their major when they pursue a four-year degree. Below is a sample list of specialties for engineering majors. This list is not exhaustive.

  • Electrical engineering
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Civil engineering
  • Agricultural engineering
  • Chemical engineering
  • Biochemical engineering
  • Aeronautical and aerospace engineering
  • Environmental engineering
  • Biomedical engineering

Planning Your Class Schedule

Students should consult with an advisor in Student Services to select courses, make a transfer plan, and periodically review their progress towards their degree completion.

Students are also encouraged to contact the admissions office at the college to which they plan to transfer during their first year at Hawkeye in order to obtain specific program and transfer requirements.

Not all courses may be required for transfer to your future major.
