JOB SUMMARY:
This position manages the operations and duties of the Veterans Services Office and serves as an advocate for veterans and other military connected students. The Veterans Services Coordinator serves nearly 300 students each year and is committed to their well-being. The college is proud to maintain its status as a military-friendly college.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Manages the Veteran Benefit programs and their processes including the Montgomery GI Bill, Iowa National Guard State Tuition Assistance, Federal Tuition Assistance, MyCAA, Iowa Trust Fund, and Trucking with the Troops Grant.
- Counsels veterans on educational and other benefits to which they may be entitled.
- Assists students with the application procedures for programs and benefits.
- Responsible for evaluating and certifying students’ degree programs; monitors and evaluates student progress; calculates, adjusts and certifies accurate tuition/fees for the various veterans benefit programs.
- Collaborates with other offices in resolving outstanding balances on student accounts or in verification of VA funding.
- Provides support for veterans and military-connected students by working with other areas of the college to address their needs/concerns; refers students to college and community resources.
- Monitors regulatory requirements required of the institution as they pertain to veterans and their dependents in higher education.
- Maintains accurate records on each veteran or military-connected student for audits performed by various agencies. Assures records are in compliance with Veterans Administration rules and regulations.
- Maintains accurate notification of new programs, name changes or program changes, calendar and catalogue to the Iowa Department of Education/Military Education Office.
- Develops campus programming for veterans and military connected students as well as programming that educates the college community about veterans and the military.
- Advocates for veterans’ educational issues through various means such as membership in professional organizations, training, conferences, and other veterans’ service provider activities and through community relationships.
- Chairs and conducts regular meetings of the Hawkeye Veterans Services Committee.
- Supervises the Veterans Lounge area.
- Advises the Student Veterans of America-Hawkeye Chapter.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Education, Sociology or Social Work or related field and one-year relevant experience or equivalent combination.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and ability to work with a culturally diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the generally public.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally, in writing, in presentations and one-on-one with students and parents
- Analytical skills to be able to reconcile funding resources
- Demonstrates ability to assist students with budgeting, evaluation of benefit options
- Demonstrates ability to learn a variety of computerized reporting systems to award, and certify enrollment, grades and billing information
- Demonstrates ability to learn many regulatory programs and evaluate how they interrelate according to regulatory guidelines
- Demonstrates ability to work flexible schedule, evenings and weekends.
- Demonstrates ability to work with a diverse student population.
PREFERENCE:
- Master’s degree preferred in Communication, Education, Sociology or Social Work or related field.
- Prior work with Veteran population
- Prior experience with Veteran Services, VA Certifying Official, Counseling, Advising and Financial Aid experience
EMPLOYMENT STATUS:
Full time position with comprehensive benefits program including health, dental, vision, life, and LTD insurance, a Section 125 plan for medical and dependent care expenses; holiday, personal, sick, and vacation leave; and a choice of retirement programs—IPERS (defined benefit) or TIAA (defined contribution). Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s education and experience.

Working conditions: Requires skills for succeeding in an office environment, using technology. Requires good hand-eye coordination including visual acuity to use a keyboard and read technical information; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.
Work is performed in an office setting. Sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently during working hours. During course of day, interact with students, faculty and staff in person, by telephone and computer.
