JOB SUMMARY: This individual schedules Public Safety personnel for optimal security and efficiency. Assures routine checks of campus facilities and satellite centers for compliance with general and specific safety standards and assures/recommends remedial action as appropriate. Works closely with the Director of Facilities to ensure campus grounds and facilities are safe by monitoring lighting, landscaping, and other safety related aspects of the campus. Develops, schedules, and implements training programs and emergency evacuation drills. Maintains Emergency and Crisis Plan and Response Guide. Serves as member of College Safety Committee. Maintains an incident and crime log of all serious crimes and serious incidents that occur on or adjacent to main campus or any center. Assists with analyzing, evaluating, developing, coordinating, and communicating on-site environmental health and safety protocols and procedures, in accordance with general College policies and regulatory requirements, to provide for a safe and secure environment. Maintains crime report statistics and reports the information annually to the Federal Department of Education. Coordinates Public Safety response to incidents such as traffic accidents, threats, violence, severe weather, thefts, electronic door failures, etc. Coordinates the selection, development, supervision, and evaluation of public safety officers. Assists in the development and enforcement of policies related to traffic, parking, student rights and campus safety. Maintains regular contact with and collaborative relationships with local law enforcement agencies. Maintains positive working relationships with campus constituencies. Conducts on-site investigations of accidents and incidents involving fire, hazardous materials, unsafe situations, and/or non-compliance issues; prepares reports and makes recommendations for procedural changes as necessary. Investigates unusual conditions or disturbances. Demonstrates awareness of campus and student cultures. Acts as operational liaison with contracted services for public safety officers. Maintains student/staff confidence and protects operational integrity by keeping information confidential. Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration or related field and five years experience in the field of public safety and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of policies and procedures relating to public safety. Knowledge of budget management and development. Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office applications Excel, Outlook, Word. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work with diverse groups i.e., staff, faculty, students, and the general public. Valid Iowa driver’s license and the ability to drive. Ability to work flexible hours, evenings, and weekends. Must pass criminal background check. Preferences include knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations; experience in Environmental Health & Safety and Occupational Health & Safety; knowledge of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) rules and regulations; Law Enforcement certification; Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field.

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full time twelve-month position with a comprehensive benefits program including health, dental, vision, life, and LTD insurance; a Section 125 plan for medical and dependent care expense; holiday, personal, sick, and vacation leave; and a choice of retirement programs--IPERS (defined benefit) or TIAA (defined contribution).  Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s education and experience.
