JOB SUMMARY: These individuals utilize Hawkeye’s academic support services, financial assistance, advising, mental health counseling and student health clinic services to enhance each individual student’s program completion. Facilitate a collaborative process with faculty and staff to retain and increase persistence rates for program students. Integrate intervention practices and support services for students whose lack of performance and or attendance may cause barriers to successful completion of course work. Create and implement preventative measures to include but are not limited to early and ongoing review of academic status of students for appropriate academic intervention referrals, financial and personal advising, and other services. Present and coordinate retention and other workshops for students, faculty, and staff. Address and mediate student conflicts. Use student development and case management models to aid in the personal growth and development of students. Resolve issues using defined policies and practices and professional knowledge as reference. Interpret standardized tests including Accuplacer, COMPASS, CLEP, ACT, and SAT used for advising and course placement. Advise students on appropriate course placement consistent with student goals. Advise students regarding assessment results and developmental course placement. Manage student progress through individual appointments and in group settings. Manage student progress when necessary through probation meetings for academic standing improvements. Utilize student records and information through Datatel and WebAdvisor software, and helps students register. Convey and interpret college requirements, policies and procedures, and provide appropriate referrals to college and community resources. Manage conflict and resolution with student issues and grievances while promoting student development; refer as needed. Coordinate and provide referrals within institution and to outside agencies, as necessary. Organize, develop, and revise, as needed, written advising tools (degree audits, program and pre-program worksheets, etc.). Develop and revise, as needed, oral presentations (group scheduling, workshops). Assist with tour days (Experience Hawkeye, etc.) as needed. Teach sections of The College Experience and/or assist with distributing the information for technical program students. Participate in appropriate college committees. Perform other related professional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree. Demonstrated ability in strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills. Ability to work with a culturally diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the general public. Self-starter with the ability to work independently with limited supervision. Ability to plan, organize, and complete advising goals and objectives. Knowledge of personal computer software applications, networks, and Internet search skills. Demonstrated effective oral, written and listening communication skills. Demonstrated effective organizational skills to manage multiple and shifting tasks/demands to meet timely deadlines. Ability to think critically and solve problems. Good judgment and ability to handle confidential/sensitive information with discretion. Preferences include Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education administration, social work, conflict resolution, or related field and experience in teaching or advising in higher education.
