JOB SUMMARY: This individual determines vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests; identifying worn and damaged parts and determines corrective action to repair vehicle.  Keeps equipment operational by completing preventive maintenance schedules; installing component and part upgrades; controlling corrosion; completing winterization procedures.  Uses independent judgment to diagnose and correct vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics; completes machine shop operations; makes adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.  Provides necessary classroom and laboratory instruction to students in the absence of faculty.  Serves as back-up driving instructor for non-credit and credit program students.  Assigns work and supervises Electronic Engineering Mechanical Emphasis student interns.  Assigns work and supervises student work-study technicians.  Approves web-time entry for student work-study technicians.  Maintains vehicle maintenance and repair records.  Orients new students and adjunct instructors to the College’s shop safety requirements.  Verifies vehicle performance by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems.  Complies with federal and state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.  Ensures vehicles are cleaned, washed, vacuumed, and painted.  Maintains vehicle records by annotating services and repairs.  Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.  Contains costs by using warranty; evaluating service and parts options.  Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.  Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications.  Performs other professional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduate of Associate Degree level Diesel Truck repair program or related program.  Working knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repair.  Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions used in maintenance and repair, proper use of personal protective equipment.  Working knowledge of basic electrical systems.  Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.  Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.  Ability to work effectively in a collaborative manner with diverse populations, faculty, students, and staff. Demonstrated ability to exhibit professional judgment, problem solving and decision making.  Ability to independently handle multiple priorities and organize and plan work. Must be insurable. Preferences include ASE Certification and valid Class A commercial driver’s license.

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full time twelve-month position with a comprehensive benefits program including health, dental, vision, life, and LTD insurance; a Section 125 plan for medical and dependent care expense; holiday, personal, sick, and vacation leave; and a choice of retirement programs--IPERS (defined benefit) or TIAA (defined contribution).  Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s education and experience.
