JOB SUMMARY:  Hawkeye Community College’s Dental Assisting program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation and the U. S. Department of Education.  Students train in Hawkeye’s state-of-the-art Dental Clinic which is open to the public and features 18 patient chairs, computerized patient record software, wireless computer stations, and a complete digital x-ray system.  Each operatory has camera monitoring for use by our several licensed, supervising dentists.  Waterloo is located in the heart of the Cedar Valley, a vibrant area balancing urban convenience with small-town charm.  The area offers excellent cultural, recreational, dining, shopping entertainment, and educational opportunities.  It is a great place to live, work, and raise a family.  This is a full-time position teaching in our Dental Assisting Program.  This position has the responsibility of providing high-quality classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction to the students of the Dental Assisting Program.  Teaching assignments may include days and evenings, and various sites and formats (face-to-face, on-line, ICN).  Necessary skills for this position include the ability to formulate and maintain curriculum for assigned courses, employ instructional methods and materials that are appropriate for meeting stated objectives, assess student progress on a regular basis, and provide progress reports as required.  Experience with or commitment to various instructional modalities such as computer-mediated instruction is essential.  Beyond instructional responsibility, this position requires advising and providing leadership to students.  This individual will be expected to demonstrate exemplary teamwork and communication skills with supervisors, program faculty, the Advisory Committee, other divisions of the College, and the community.  Leadership opportunities are available in the following areas: expanding and integrating curriculum with virtual simulations and alternate delivery formats; direction of clinical experience, including external sites and on-site dental clinic; developing continuing/professional education offerings; grant projects; program promotion; advising and mentoring; and initiatives to increase enrollment of nontraditional students

QUALIFICATIONS:  Must be an Iowa Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) or Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) and a nationally certified dental assistant (CDA).  A minimum of three years work experience in general dentistry performing four-handed chair-side assisting and Associate’s degree in Dental Assisting or Dental Hygiene.  Preferences include a Bachelor’s degree; current CPR, First Aid, and Mandatory Reporter certifications; front desk reception and office procedures work experience; formal teacher training/experience; and clinical, classroom, and laboratory instruction in an accredited dental assisting program. Must have the ability to effectively communicate with students, colleagues, staff, and the public.

EMPLOYMENT STATUS:  Nine-month contractual position beginning no later than January 3, 2018.  Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s education and experience and will include a comprehensive benefits program including health, dental, vision, life, and LTD insurance; a Section 125 plan for medical and dependent care expense; personal and sick leave; and a choice of retirement programs--IPERS (defined benefit) or TIAA (defined contribution).
