The Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center is looking for a full-time Reading/Language Arts Instructor to join their team. While working at the Adult Learning Center, you are helping make a meaningful impact on the everyday lives of their students. Students are empowered to get the education and skills they need to thrive at work, school, home and in their community all while earning their high school equivalency diploma or learning the English language.

As the full-time Reading/Language Arts Instructor, you will be planning and delivering whole group reading and writing instruction to help students prepare for the HiSET reading and writing exam in order to earn their High School Equivalency Diploma. Additionally, this position will work with students to integrate College and Career Readiness Standards, 21st Century Employability Skills, and CASAS GOALS competencies.

These non-credit reading and writing courses are part of the Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program, which is funded by and operated in accordance with the federal and state Department of Education. Classes operate on a quarter system under managed enrollment and run year-round.

Essential Job Functions

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Teaches both morning and evening reading and language arts classes with the High School Completion program as assigned.

  • Teaches face-to-face, online, remote, blended/hybrid, and distance learning classes in both synchronous and asynchronous modalities.

  • Provides instruction in reading, writing, composition, grammar, proofreading, typing, and formatting of word processing documents.

  • Updates, expands, improves, and maintains standards-based curriculum that prepares students for high-stakes testing.

  • Prepares standards-based lesson plans, activities, assignments, and assessments that are tailored to specific skill levels.

  • Delivers whole group instruction to help students prepare for the HiSET reading and writing exams.

  • Creates and expands reading and language arts content for students in the Canvas learning management system and Google Drive. Instructs students on how to utilize the system.

  • Oversees HSC students who are enrolled in the asynchronous online courses.

  • Employs instructional methods and materials that are appropriate for meeting stated objectives.

  • Assesses student progress on a regular basis.

  • Utilizes classroom technology and integrates digital literacy into lessons.

  • Uses explicit instruction and participatory learning techniques.

  • Works with a diverse population of students who are primarily adults but as young as 16 years and 9 months of age.

  • Provides guidance, support, and motivation for students who have encountered academic difficulties.

  • Works with students to integrate College and Career Readiness Standards, 21st Century Employability Skills, and CASAS GOALS competencies.

  • Ensures class compliance with federal, state, and college requirements.

  • Makes recommendations for purchases of new teaching materials, books, and digital tools.

  • Maintains daily attendance records for face-to-face, remote, and online students.

  • Maintains integrity of assessments.

  • Identifies areas of student need and differentiates instruction.

  • Understands and adapts to different learning styles.

  • Provides instructional accommodations as needed.

  • Prepares students for postsecondary education and training, employment, and better employment.

  • Learns and applies new strategies and methods.

  • Assists Coordinator with class placement of students.

  • Implements Department of Education initiatives in the classroom.

  • Collaborates with other content area teachers and program coordinator for student success.

  • Attends regular staff meetings and professional development.

  • Participates in retention, recruitment, and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

  • Serves on internal and external committees.

  • Maintains student confidentiality.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Reading, English Language Arts, Communications or closely related field.

  • One-year teaching experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated high proficiency using Google Suite.

  • Demonstrated ability to work a flexible schedule which includes Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

  • Demonstrated ability to teach year-round, including summers.

  • Demonstrated ability to work and interact effectively and courteously with diverse staff, students, and general public.

  • Demonstrated ability to work innovatively, individually as well as in teams.

  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through inclusive behaviors and helping contribute to a culture of inclusivity, and a vibrant, diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning and working environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s in Education.

  • Teaching certification.

  • Experience in Adult Education and Literacy (AEL), High School Completion (HSC), Adult Basic Education (ABE), High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED), and/or with HiSET/GED tests.

  • Experience with instructional/classroom technology.

  • Experience with online, hybrid, or distance learning.

  • Bilingual.

Working Conditions

Anticipated schedule is: Monday-Thursday daytime hours with Tuesday/Thursday being a longer workday which includes evening hours until 8:30 pm.

Requires skills for succeeding in an office environment, using technology. Requires good hand-eye coordination including visual acuity to use a keyboard and read technical information; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp. Work is performed in an office setting. Sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently during working hours. During the course of the day, interact with students, faculty and staff in person, by telephone and computer.

Employment Status
