Job Summary

This position is located at the Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center and is responsible for providing excellent customer service by phone and in person at the welcome desk to students, staff, partners, and visitors. This position also provides clerical support for a variety of special projects, classes, functions, and activities, primarily for the Adult Education and Literacy programs (i.e., English Language Learning and High School Completion Programs).

Essential Job Functions

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Welcomes students and visitors by greeting them, checking for appointments, and providing information and directions.

  • Answers the telephone, takes messages, provides information, directs inquiries, and monitors voicemail.

  • Maintains effective and efficient flow of communication and information through calendars, emails, telephone messages, and records.

  • Communicates daily with both native and non-native speakers of English in person and on the telephone.

  • Completes tasks using email, word processing, spreadsheets, and other applications.

  • Protects students and the college by keeping information confidential.

  • Assists staff and students with office-related needs.

  • Assists with student registration as needed.

  • Assists with classroom materials distribution and inventory.

  • Alerts leadership team and/or public safety of any issues in the building.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Specific Responsibilities

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assists and directs student and visitor questions to appropriate staff and/or departments.

  • Maintains and communicates knowledge of programs, classes, events, and activities.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/High School Equivalency Diploma.

  • One year of office experience or one year of related education or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to work with and provide customer service for diverse populations (staff, students, visitors, and general public).

  • A positive professional image.

  • Google Suite and Microsoft Office skills.

  • Organization, time management, and verbal communication skills.

Employment Status

Part-time evening position averaging 20 hours per week. Anticipated hours will be four days a week, five hours per day, from 3:30PM to 8:30PM, Monday through Thursday, when classes are in session, with the potential for flexible, slightly altered scheduling when classes are not in session. There are no hours over the two week winter break period.

Working conditions: Requires skills for succeeding in an office environment, using technology. Requires good hand-eye coordination including visual acuity to use a keyboard and read technical information; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.

Work is performed in an office setting. Sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently during working hours. During course of day, interact with students, faculty and staff in person, by telephone and computer.
