Our job is to help make sure that you are trained and confident when you leave our program and start your first job as a commercial truck driver. Hawkeye's Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Certificate program is a competency-based program designed for individuals to train for a career that offers freedom, stability, and competitive pay. You progress through the program as you master the obstacles put in front of you.

What Will You Learn in the Course?

The program will focus on developing safe driving skills in backing, turning, and driving on rural and suburban roads.

Students will train using a variety of techniques including:

Instructors can change the environments in which students may drive their truck. Some of these conditions include:

  • Rain, snow, wind, or fog.
  • Day, evening, or night.
  • Dry, wet, and icy road surface conditions.
  • 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 13, and 18 speed transmissions.
  • Different engine manufacturers such as Mack and Cummins.

Hawkeye has a placement rate of 98% (per 2017 PTDI reporting) into the career. Commercial truck driving is a great paying career with excellent opportunities. Truck drivers are in demand and the need for drivers is expected to increase over the next several years. Iowa Workforce Development projects more than 1,300 openings each year for truck drivers in Iowa through the year 2024.

Do I have to drive on the road right away?

You will learn on one of the top truck driving simulators you can drive before moving on to Hawkeye's private driving course. We want to make sure you master the semi and feel confident before hitting the open road.

Do you help me find a job after I finish the course?

Hawkeye has a placement rate of 98% (per 2017 PTDI reporting) into the career. Commercial truck driving is a great-paying career with excellent opportunities. We help to introduce you to companies who are looking to hire drivers but we don't provide direct job placement.

What are the requirements to take the course?

All students must be able to read, speak, write, and comprehend English. No interpreters are allowed per CDL regulations.

Prior to starting, you must pass the General Knowledge, Air brakes, and Combination test at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and obtain your Class A Commercial Learner Permit (CLP) permit. You must also pass and pay for a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and pre-employment drug screening. You must also register with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, which we will assist you with.
