Veterans Day Ceremony

Veterans Day Ceremony 2020 will look a bit differently than previous years, but we hope you will join us for a live recording with a welcome from Dr. Holcomb, music by the talented Kari Kaufman (academic/college success advisor) and Andrew Finnega, and guest speaker, Jathan Chicoine. The live recording will be available here, on Facebook, and YouTube.

Jathan Chicoine is from Central Iowa and was recently hired this year as one of the program managers for Home Base Iowa where he works to connect veterans and transitioning service members with career and educational opportunities in the state of Iowa.

Previously, Jathan has served as the Director of the Iowa State University Veterans Center from 2011–2020. During his career at Iowa State he also served as chair of the Iowa Advisory Council on Military Education and continues on the leadership team. He also served as the Veterans Liaison for the Council of Colleges and Military Educators. He co-founded the first Veterans Resource Center in South Dakota and was appointed to serve on the U.S. Small Business Administration's Advisory Committee on Veterans Business Affairs from 2009–2010.

Jathan is a Veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served as a Navy SEAL and Intelligence Specialist. Following his military career, Jathan traveled throughout Europe and South America developing language competencies in both French and Spanish. While he pursued his undergraduate and Master's degrees at the University of South Dakota, he worked to revitalize the campus Veterans Club and became student body president at the University of South Dakota.

Outside his professional career, Jathan works with his family's bison herd on his father's farm, with attention to developing self-sustainable farming and developing diverse ecosystems through the restoration of native habitats of the land.

Jathan and I developed a wonderful working partnership in our leadership roles in the Iowa Advisory Council on Military Education and with many other state initiatives for Home Base Iowa and the development of more robust statewide efforts in evaluating military credit. It is a pleasure to have him as our guest speaker for the 2020 Hawkeye Community College Veterans Day Ceremony.
