This presentation will equip first responders, and healthcare providers with the knowledge and tools necessary to effectively communicate with someone who has limited oral speech (e.g., people with autism, aphasia, cerebral palsy, etc.) in high-stakes events where communication is essential. Relevant communication boards will be provided to participants. Learning Objectives 1. Successfully recognize low-tech and high-tech AAC systems. 2. Accurately describe at least four major types of acquired and/or congenital conditions that may require the use of AAC to communicate. 3. Given a scenario, correctly apply at least two effective communication strategies to aid a communication breakdown during an emergency. This program is approved for EMS Hours, IBON approved Iowa Board of Nursing Provider #5.
