This seminar is an all day event that is co-sponsored by the IaSRC. This seminar will grant the participant to gain knowledge from experts in the field. This seminar is to provide professional continuing education for Respiratory Therapists and other healthcare professionals on cardiopulmonary topics. Application has been made to the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) for continuing education contact hours for respiratory therapist.

Session 1: Your State Licensing Board

- Understand the role of the state licensing board.
- Understand the board’s complaint/discipline process.
- ​Understand the board’s rulemaking process.
Session 2: Total Laryngectomy: Considerations for Respiratory Care
Facilitator: Elizabeth Lucarelli MS, CCC-SLP
Course Objectives
- Participants will be able to explain anatomical changes following a total laryngectomy.
- Participants will understand speech, swallowing, and pulmonary changes following a total laryngectomy.
- Participants will identify respiratory care and rescue practices for total laryngectomy.
- Participants will identify products related to stoma care in total laryngectomy.
Session 3: Mechanical Ventilation: Separation and the Art of the Wean

- Review current literature involving mechanical ventilation liberation.
- Discuss usefulness of weaning protocols.
- Examine Case Studies.
Session 4: Nasal High Flow Therapy: Fad or Serious Management Strategy?

- Describe what Nasal High Flow Therapy is.
- Describe the Mechanisms of Action for Nasal High Flow Therapy.
- Review types of systems available for delivery of Nasal High Flow Therapy.
- Review the current literature surrounding the application of Nasal High Flow Therapy.
- Review Case studies where Nasal High Flow Therapy was applied.
Session 5: NAVA NAVA NAVA

Course Objectives
- Learn what NAVA stands for.
- Understand the Edi signal and how to evaluate.
- Learn how to manage NAVA level.
Session 6: Ventilator Graphics – Know Your Waves!

Course Objectives
- Understand the “Normal” ventilator waveforms.
- Be able to interpret the patient’s effort in the waveforms.
- Be able to recommend changes in ventilator settings based on ventilator waveforms.

Tony Alden
Tony has been the Board Executive for 12 years with the Bureau of Professional Licensure for the Iowa Department of Public Health.
Elizabeth Lucarelli, MS, CCC-SLP
Elizabeth has been a practicing speech-language pathologist for 11 years with a special focus on head and neck cancer, including laryngectomy. My clinical practice has included both acute care and outpatient adult medical settings. During this time, I have provided several clinical education opportunities for other disciplines, including nursing, rehabilitation, nutrition, and respiratory care. I received my bachelor’s in communication science and disorders from the College of Wooster in 2005, and a master’s in speech language pathology from Gallaudet University in 2008.
James Baker, RRT, LRT
James is currently a respiratory care supervisor in the cardiac intensive care unit at the Mayo Clinic and was a respiratory therapist for 18 years. He also spent seven years as an ECMO specialist.
Julie Jackson, BAS, RRT, RRT-ACCS
Julis is a manager of respiratory care and ECLS at UnityPoint Health in Des Moines, Iowa.
Bob Whiteside, RRT
Bob is a registered respiratory therapist working as an account manager of clinical education for Getinge and Servo Ventilators. Bob is an experienced ventilator trainer. He has been evaluating and teaching ventilator graphics since 1995 and training NAVA users since 2008.
