Cedar Valley Respiratory Care Seminar

Gain knowledge from experts in the field of respiratory care and earn five AARC CRCE contact hours.* The event is sponsored by the IaSRC and Hawkeye Community College.

8:40–9:40am Virtual Care: Endless Possibilities – Jo Comer, registered respiratory therapist          Course Objectives: Be aware of multiple modalities of providing virtual healthcare. Develop a knowledge of virtual healthcare for disease management.
9:40–9:45am Break
9:45–10:45am Do You Have Rhythm? A Fib and Sleep Apnea – Lisa Maher, nurse practioner Course Objectives: Identify cardiac conditions associated with sleep apnea. Develop a treatment plan for patients with atrial fibrillation and sleep apnea. Assess risk factors associated with sleep apnea.
10:45–10:55am Break
10:55–11:15am COPD Case Management – Jared Kindred, registered respiratory therapist, AAS Course objectives: Define respiratory therapy role in COPD management. Outline patient population appropriate for case management. Define COPD criteria.
11:55am–1:00pm Lunch

Choose one of two times during the lunch break to view the Patient Simulator Lab in Grundy Hall.

1:00–2:00pm Difficult Airways – Dr. Pankaj Mehta, pulmonologist Course objectives: Discuss ways to identify a difficult airway and strategies for successful intubation.


2:10–3:10pm Breathe Easy – Dr. Pankaj Nagaraj, neonatologist Course objectives: Discuss mechanical ventilation strategies for the neonate population.
3:10–3:30pm Closing remarks, certificate distribution


Jo Comer is a respiratory case manager for the VA of Central Iowa. Jo's clinic responsibilities include outreach clinics, home-based primary care, and the ALS/SCI veteran population. She also provides telehealth services to clinics and in patient's homes using multiple modalities. Additionally, she established a training program, utlizing super-users for the telehealth care technicians to unsure standard processes, effective communication, and knowledge of respiratory equipment services.

Lisa Maher is a nurse practitioner at the Cedar Valley Cardiovacular Center. She specializes in the treatment of general cardiology, sleep apnea, weight loss, and risk factor modification.

Jared Kindred is a respiratory case manager for the VA of Central Iowa. Jared's clinic responsibilities include an outreach clinic which provides telehealth services and a Des Moines primary care clinic. Additionally, he is the facilitator for the COPD case management program which provides group education classes for veterans.

Dr. Pankaj Mehta is a pulmonologist affiliated with Covenant Medical Center. He has been in practice 17 years and specializes in pulmonary and sleep medicine, and has a critical care and internal medical certification.

Dr. Pankaj Nagaraj is a neonatologist affiliated with UnityPoint Health and specializes in neonatal-perinatal medicine. He has been in practice 14 years and received his degree from Kempegowda Institute of Medical Science. In 2015, he received the Patients' Choice Award and the On-Time Doctor Award.

Continuing Education Contact Hours

Earn five AARC CRCE contact hours. Application has been made to the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) for continuing education contact hours for respiratory therapists.
