Class Description: This class is offered as a module in the 'Managment of the Critically Ill Patient' series. Class objectives include: discuss the mechanics of inspiration and expiration; describe airway resistance, compliance, deadspace and shunting; discuss how the respiratory center in the brain stem functions; and define lung volumes and capacities. The course is designed for healthcare professionals, including nurses, paramedics, EMTs and respiratory therapists, who are providing care for a critically ill patient in multiple settings, such as an emergency department, critical care unit, medical/surgical unit, and home care. Expert instructors will provide the education. The course will include extensive handouts, up-to-date information, CEUs, and a live broadcast via the Iowa Communications Network (ICN). Competency testing is also available upon request.
