Stand for the Silent

Hawkeye Community College will host anti-bullying and suicide awareness advocate Kirk Smalley for two presentations on Wednesday, December 6, at 9:30am and 6:30pm in Tama Hall on Hawkeye’s Main Campus, 1501 E. Orange Road, Waterloo.

Smalley’s son, Ty Field-Smalley, committed suicide at age 11 after being suspended from school for retaliating against a bully who had bullied him for two years. Stand for the Silent was founded in 2010 by a group of Oklahoma high school students after they heard Ty’s story. Since then, Kirk and Laura Smalley have taken their message to more than 1,000 schools and spoken to more than 1,000,000 kids.

Both presentations are free and open to the public. This event is organized by Cedar Valley Stand for the Silent; Alive and Running; and the Minds, Action, People, Society Club, a student-run organization at Hawkeye Community College for students with interests in psychology, sociology, and social work.
