Integrated Education and Training (IET) Programs
Our Integrated Education and Training (IET) programs are aimed to provide workplace skills and adult basic education to English Language Learners and High School Completion students, so they can qualify for promotions or jobs in a high-demand industry.
At the end of these programs, students can take an examination and earn a certification in a specific area.
Currently, we offer two Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) courses in Basic Construction Skills and Child Health, Safety, and Nutrition training program, an Integrated Education and Training Commercial Driver's License (CDL) training, and three Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) programs in Certified Nursing Assistant, Computer Numerical Control, and Hospitality Management.
To enroll in Integrated Education and Training programs:
- Enroll as either a High School Completion or English Language Learning student
- Complete the I_BEST Application.
Our Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) Basic Construction Skills program provides technical training for an in-demand career.
In this training, students learn about workplace safety, construction math and construction drawing, material handling, and safe handling of hand and power tools.
Students also learn about employability and communication skills while improving their English skills.
Upon completion of the course students:
Our Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) Child Health, Safety, and Nutrition course prepares students for employment in the childcare field and on the career pathway for education.
Upon successful completion of this course students will:
- Receive certification in CPR
- Receive certification in Bloodborne Pathogens
- Complete Essentials Child Care PreService Training
- Complete Mandatory Reporter Training
This is a non-credit to credit articulation course which gives credit for the course ECE-133 to students who enter the Early Childhood Education Associate Degree program.
The Integrated Education and Training (IET) Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training prepares students for the Iowa DOT CDL Class A examination including the Pre-trip Vehicle Inspection, Skills, and Driving tests.
At the beginning of the program students study for the General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination Vehicle tests to earn a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). The Commercial Learner’s Permit allows students to train in semi-trailer trucks of over 26.000 lbs.
Instructors also help with workplace preparation skills, job applications, and technical vocabulary in the commercial driving setting.
Our Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) programs aim to start your college career by providing college credits to pursue an associates degree at Hawkeye Community College while helping you improve your English skills to increase your job success.
In the I-BEST model, a basic skills instructor and content instructor jointly design and teach college-level occupational classes that admit basic skills-level students.
Basic skills instructors help with English, math, workforce preparation skills, etc.
Content instructors provide the workplace skills for an in-demand career.
In the I-BEST Computer Numerical Control (CNC) program students learn the basics of precision machining including how to use precision measurement devices like a caliper, micrometers, and different size gauges to learn how to machine a part within 0.005”. Students also learn how to set up a part and how to control the CNC mill.
Students learn on controllers that simulate machines and proof your programs before they load them to a machine.
Upon successful completion of this program students:

Will have the skills needed to apply for entry level machining work or to seek a promotion from their current employer.

Will have earned six college credits and have completed the Machine Trade Printreading I (3 credits), Introduction to CNC Programming I (2 credits), and Industrial Safety and Mechanical Systems (1 credit plus OSHA 10 Safety Card) courses.

Can enroll in the CNC Machining and Tool-Making Technology AAS degree program offered on Main Campus.
The I-BEST Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program works with students to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), a healthcare professional who provides hands-on care services to patients or clients with healthcare needs under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
Tasks performed include, but are not limited to, measuring patient vitals signs and feeding, bathing, dressing, and moving patients.
Instructors help students with workplace skills for CNA and to help prepare them for the CNA state exam to become registered CNAs.
Upon successful completion of this program students:
The I-BEST Hospitality Management program prepares students for new challenges in the food or lodging industry.
During the 16-week semester, students will:

Learn fundamentals in how to safely prepare food when serving customers, event planning, and restaurant and hotel management.

Take part in hands-on activities at the RedTail Café, an integrated classroom on Main Campus, where they learn how to use equipment such as Point-of-Sales systems, coffee makers, ovens, dishwashers, etc.

Learn from successful business owners about real-life experiences in the workplace.
Upon successful completion of this program students:

Are eligible to take the National Restaurant Association ServSafe Manager exam that certifies that they have food safety knowledge to protect the public from foodborne illness.

Will have earned six college credits and have completed the Hospitality Safety and Sanitation (3 credits) and Introduction to Hospitality (3 credits) courses of the Hospitality Management AAS degree program offered on Main Campus.
