Academic Career Education and College Transition Services
Students in the English Language Learning Program or the High School Completion Program are eligible to receive one-on-one assistance from the Adult Learning Center’s AEL Academic Career Education Specialist, as well as the Transition Specialist as they obtain their high school equivalency diploma or improve their English skills.
Students receive support in the following areas:

Goal-Setting: Students will engage in self-reflection and goal-setting activities in order to develop effective strategies to overcome barriers and realize their goals.

Career Exploration: Students will receive individualized advising when deciding an educational path or training program that fits their interests, skills, and abilities. Students will have the opportunity to take career assessments, participate in job shadowing opportunities, and listen to industry guest speakers discuss the ins and out of their professions.

Community Referrals: When students experience family, childcare, transportation, or any other personal barriers to their personal, academic, and career goals students can meet with the AEL Career Specialist to create an action plan to alleviate those barriers, receiving referrals to community resource agencies as needed.

Career-Readiness Skills: To be college and career ready, students must leave the Adult Learning Center with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to succeed in rigorous collegiate environments and the workplace. Students will receive instruction on how to create and update resumes, how to navigate the job search, as well as best practices when preparing for a job interview.

College Visits: Want to learn about life as a college student? As a way to promote a college-going culture, students will have the opportunity to go on campus tours and observe college classes.

Transitioning to College: As students obtain their high school equivalency diploma or improve their English skills, they will receive assistance requesting their HiSET transcripts or verifying foreign credentials, as well as navigating the college admissions process and fulfilling college admissions requirements.

Financial Aid and Scholarship Assistance: As students are making the transition to college they will learn the costs of college, how they can fund their education, as well as receive assistance applying for scholarships and writing the scholarship essay.

Main Campus Support and Advocacy: Once students transition to college, the Transition Specialist is able to provide additional support on Hawkeye Community College’s Main Campus to better ensure persistence and completion of degrees.
