  Brianne Martin knew she wanted to do something in the medical field, but it wasn't until she spent time shadowing a family friend that she decided dental hygiene was for her. She first completed her Dental Assisting degree, and now she's finishing Dental Hygiene and a bachelor's in public health from Allen.

• Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation Announces $250,000 Grant to Hawkeye Community College Dental Clinic

• Graduate Spotlight – Alyssa Hertges

  Alyssa Hertges did her research before coming to Hawkeye Community College. The Decorah native quickly learned Hawkeye was the place to go for Dental Hygiene. Seats in the program were in high demand, so she started in Dental Assisting, gaining many crossover skills that complemented both fields. Now a double Hawkeye graduate, she's already thinking about returning someday as an instructor. “I want everybody to experience something that they love doing.”

• Hawkeye Gives High Schoolers Dramatic Introduction to Health Careers

  It was a dramatic, hands-on approach to introduce the students to health careers they can train for at the college. They followed the two victims of the crash, “Johnny” and “Chester,” during the morning-long event as they were helped by paramedics, respiratory therapists, nurses, medical lab technicians, occupational and physical therapists, and dental professionals.
