November Letter from The President

posted on Thursday, November 1, 2018 in  Parent Newsletter

Dear Hawkeye Parents,

During the month of November Hawkeye Community College will recognize students, faculty, and staff who are veterans of the military service. A Veterans Day observance will take place beginning with a Flag Raising Ceremony at 11:11am at the Flagpole outside of Hawkeye Center. At 12:15pm a ceremony will take place in Tama Hall. There will be a brief reception immediately following at approximately 12:45pm. We appreciate the sacrifices made by our veterans and this is one way our entire student body is involved in showing recognition. We currently have 220 Military and Veteran Students enrolled at Hawkeye. Please encourage your son or daughter to participate in this event. Other events to recognize Veterans Day observances include:

A Wall of Honor display in Brock Student Center

Tara Rew, a nursing student and flight medic with the Iowa National Guard will present on her experiences in Afghanistan (Tuesday, November 6, 12:00noon, Grundy Hall Room 175)

The film The War After will be presented with a panel of student veterans offering a question and answer dialogue with students, faculty and staff to share their experience transitioning from military service to civilian and college life. (Wednesday, November 14, 12:00noon in Tama Hall)

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for guiding your son/daughter throughout their education. Navigating the college experience can be challenging, but with the support of family, these challenges are manageable. One big challenge faced by all students is figuring out how to pay for college and associate living expenses. I encourage you to check out the Financial Aid page on our website where you will find helpful information about applying for financial aid, learning how it will be awarded, and many other resources related to paying for college. Spring 2019 registration began on Monday, October 29 and students are encouraged to register early to get the best selection of courses and class times!

And, as always, thank you for your support of Hawkeye Community College.

Linda Allen, Ph.D.
