Hawkeye Community College to Offer Summer Tech Camps

WATERLOO–Hawkeye Community College will offer Black Rocket Summer Tech Camps this summer covering a wide range of topics, from video games to Minecraft. All camps will take place in Buchanan Hall on Hawkeye’s Main Campus, 1501 East Orange Road, Waterloo.

Make Your First 3D Video Game–June 26-30
This new class allows kids to develop a game concept that goes beyond the limitations of traditional 2D game design classes. Students will learn the physics behind 3D games, explore beginner event scripting, level design, controlling flow of gameplay, and storytelling. A section for students ages 8-11 runs from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. each day, and a section for kids ages 12-14 is from 1:00-4:00 p.m. each day.

Code Breakers–July 10-14
Learn the basics of coding languages like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS through a series of web projects and design challenges each day and be on your way to becoming the next tech star! Whether you want to be the next Mark Zuckerberg or the high school student who just made $1 million dollars for programming in his bedroom, this course has the essentials you need to begin your journey. A section for students ages 8-11 runs from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. each day, and a section for kids ages 12-14 is from 1:00-4:00 p.m. each day.

Minecraft Designers–July 17-21
Learn the basics of creating 3D models using a new software to design our very own objects, create skins for characters, and import them into your favorite Minecraft games. This class is for students ages 8-11 and meets 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. each day.

Minecraft Modders–July 17-21
Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mod! Introductory coding will also be taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft. This class is for students ages 12-14 and meets from 1:00-4:00 p.m. each day.

Minecraft Animators–July 24-28
In this class, students bring their favorite Minecraft characters to life in an animated short film. Learn how studios like Pixar and Disney make movies like Inside Out and Frozen by using techniques like keyframing, tweening, texturing, and animating rigged 3D models! A section for students ages 8-11 runs from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. each day, and a section for kids ages 12-14 is from 1:00-4:00 p.m. each day.
