Hawkeye Community College to Host College Esports Tournament October 8-9

WATERLOO–Hawkeye Community College is hosting the Hawkeye Invitational Esports Tournament October 8-9, 2021, at the Waterloo Convention Center (200 W 4th St) in downtown Waterloo. 

“This will be one of the largest college esports tournaments in Iowa to date and the first of its kind in the Cedar Valley,” said Ethan Crawford, director of athletics and recreation at Hawkeye Community College.

Twenty-four teams from 10 colleges and universities will compete over the two-day tournament in League of Legends, Overwatch, and Rocket League, with cash prizes totaling $3,000. Participating schools include: 

  • Hawkeye Community College 
  • University of Northern Iowa 
  • St. Ambrose University 
  • Columbia College
  • Northwestern College
  • Buena Vista University
  • Waldorf University
  • Kirkwood Community College
  • Iowa Central Community College
  • Bellevue University

Final tournament brackets and game times will be posted on the RedTail Athletics website by October 1. Spectators can watch the game play live on large screens in the convention center. The event is open to the public and there is no cost for admission. Concessions will be available for purchase on site. Competition begins at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, October 8, and at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 9. The tournament is expected to run for 8-10 hours both days, depending on the length of each game.
