WATERLOO–Hawkeye Community College will kick off a new temporary exhibit by artist Jill Wells with a gallery day and reception on Thursday, November 2, 2023, in the Hawkeye Art Gallery, third floor of  the Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center, 120 Jefferson Street, Waterloo.

An Iowa-based artist, advocate, and mentor, Wells has firmly situated herself within art and advocacy work. A 2005 graduate of Drake University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, she is well known for her dynamic, colorful, and tactile multimedia works investigating race, history, stereotypes, accessibility, and human experiences. By exploring the powerful alignment between arts integration and Universal Design, Wells' work seeks solutions for innovative pathways into accessible art.

Her exhibit, titled Challenging Balance, is an immersive sensory art installation exploring the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Using first-person stories from Disability Visibility by Alice Wong, Wells explore issues of justice, transformation, and moving through barriers.

The day will begin with coffee and bagels at 9:00am, followed by a gallery talk with the artist at 10:00am. The opening reception will begin that evening at 6:00pm.

This exhibit is supported by the Iowa Department for the Blind. Challenging Balance will remain on display through December 13, 2023.
