Graduate Spotlight - Kayla Walter

Like so many students, Kayla Walter came to Hawkeye Community College unsure of her future. After graduating from high school in 2018, the New Hampton native started out pursuing a career in education.

After taking several classes, Kayla realized the career wasn’t a good fit for her. While she didn’t want to work in a traditional classroom setting, she did want to have an impact and serve as a “beam of light” for children in need.

Kayla changed her major to Liberal Arts, and began taking classes in public speaking, communications, acting, and even a la carte dining. The variety allowed her to explore new subject areas that pushed her out of her comfort zone. She helped plan and execute the President’s Holiday Dinner, and was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society

As the first person in her family to graduate from college, Kayla is excited and optimistic about the future. She plans to pursue a career mentoring youth, working with before or after-school programming, or with a non-profit organization.

“I plan on entering a field where I can help others and be the person that believes in them,” she said.
