Reverse Credit Transfer

The reverse credit transfer option allows students to transfer credits from a 2-year and/or 4-year college or university back to Hawkeye Community College to complete their degree.

Transfer in Iowa Reverse Credit Transfer Program for Iowa Regent Universities

If you will be transferring credits from Iowa State University, University of Iowa, or the University of Northern Iowa to complete your two-year Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree at Hawkeye, check out the Transfer in Iowa Reverse Credit Transfer Program.

When applying for admission to your transfer university, opt into the Reverse Credit Transfer Program on your transfer universities admissions application form.

If you have already applied for admission at your transfer university and didn’t indicate that you want to opt into the Reverse Credit Transfer Program, contact your transfer university now to opt in.

Reverse Credit Transfer Requirements

Students must meet all of the following requirements to successfully reverse credit transfer to complete their degree at Hawkeye:

  • Meet Hawkeye Community College's minimum on-campus credit residency requirements by either:

    • Completing at least 30 credits at Hawkeye prior to transferring.
    • Completing 16 of your last 22 credits at Hawkeye. Visit with your Hawkeye Academic/College Success Advisor to see if you qualify for this option and request to have your degree audit updated.
  • Have a degree GPA of 2.00 or higher before transferring.

  • Receive a grade of C- or higher in order for your credits to transfer back to Hawkeye.

Before Transferring

  1. Send your Hawkeye transcript to your transfer university.

  2. Work with your Hawkeye Academic/College Success Advisor to make sure the courses you take will transfer back to Hawkeye and meet your remaining degree requirements.

  3. Update your contact information with your personal email address to continue to receive emails from Hawkeye including emails about the Commencement Ceremony. Visit My Hawkeye > Self-Service Menu > Students > Self Service > User Options > About You.

Transferring Credits Back to Hawkeye to Complete Your Degree

If you have opted into the Transfer in Iowa Reverse Credit Transfer Program for Iowa Regent Universities:

  1. Your transfer university will automatically send your transcript to Hawkeye free of charge at the end of the semester once you have earned the 60 combined Hawkeye and transfer credits.

  2. Hawkeye will send your updated transcript, which shows your degree, to your transfer university. Please allow six – eight weeks from the end of the term that you completed the required reverse transfer coursework at your transfer university to complete this process.

If you have not opted into the Transfer in Iowa Reverse Credit Transfer Program:

  1. Work with your Hawkeye Academic/College Success Advisor to make sure the courses you take will transfer back to Hawkeye and meet your remaining degree requirements.

  2. Complete the Intent to Reverse Credit Transfer form [pdf] to have your transfer credit applied toward your two-year degree at Hawkeye and to check that you are on track to graduate.

  3. If you are on track to graduate: After your final grades from your last semester of classes have been recorded on your transcript, request to have your official transcript from your transfer college/university sent to the Hawkeye Admissions office.

  4. Once your degree is processed by Hawkeye, request to have your official transcript sent to your transfer college/university. Your transcript will now show your completed degree.

Receiving Your Diploma from Hawkeye

Your diploma will be printed and mailed to the name and address on file at Hawkeye.

If your name and/or address changed after transferring:

Do you have a hold on your student account?

If there is a hold on your student account, Hawkeye cannot send you your diploma until the hold has been resolved.

If there is a hold on your student account, we will mail you a letter to the address on file to notify you of the hold.

Once all holds have been resolved, contact the Registrar's Office to request your diploma be mailed to you.

Celebrate at Hawkeye's Commencement Ceremony!

Hawkeye celebrates the graduation of our students once a year in May for our Fall, Spring, and Summer graduates.

Students that have or will complete all program requirements during the current academic year's fall, spring, or summer semesters are eligible to participate in Hawkeye's Commencement Ceremony.

To participate in Hawkeye's commencement ceremony:

  1. Once you've registered for your last term of classes at your transfer college/university that will complete your degree requirements, complete the Intent to Reverse Credit Transfer form [pdf] if you have not done so already.

    • The Intent to Reverse Credit Transfer form needs to be received by the graduation application deadline.

    • If you are on track to graduate, a graduation application will be submitted on your behalf using the information on your Intent to Reverse Credit Transfer form.

  2. Watch your email for communication from Hawkeye regarding the Commencement Ceremony. Emails will be sent from commencement@hawkeyecollege.edu.

  3. Purchase your cap, gown, and tassel.
