Inclusion and Civility Task Force

Fall 2020 Update

Charge

Recent events in our community, our country, and throughout the world have emphasized the urgent need for us to examine Hawkeye's practices and policies so that we can assure that we are truly reflective of the values we espouse. Further, with a presidential election this fall, it is critical that Hawkeye is prepared to emulate and support civil discourse and education so that our students can be prepared to exercise their rights as informed and engaged citizens.

To begin this process, the Task Force for Inclusion and Civility was commissioned to work diligently this summer with the goal of preparing Hawkeye for fall semester. The scope of the Task Force's work is as follows:

Education and Training

  • Spearhead and support an educational campaign for fall semester geared around both inclusivity and the upcoming presidential election.
  • Develop and provide training for faculty and staff that provide information and resources for how to respond when issues arise.

Policy Review

  • Student Code of Conduct: Inform and support updates to Student Code of Conduct to enable the College to respond to incidents that do not reflect the College's values of inclusivity and civility.
  • Free Speech and Expression Policy: Review policy and discuss any concerns related to assembly and demonstration.
  • Student Organization Recognition: Review policies and procedures related to student organization to assure that their purpose is aligned with College values.

Managing Demonstration

  • Review policies and procedures related to managing demonstrations and assemblies, including potential law enforcement assistance.

Recommended Next Steps

  • Provide a list of recommended next steps, including prioritization.
