Things You Should Know About the Transferring Process

  • College transfer requirements vary and change regularly. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR TRANSFER COLLEGE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION.
  • Most liberal arts colleges require a 2.00 college grade point average (G.P.A.) for acceptance upon completion of a two-year degree. A few selective or out-of-state colleges may have higher college entrance requirements.
  • The entrance G.P.A. requirements may vary from year to year, from college to college. Admission to a college does not guarantee admission to some majors. Some majors have a minimum G.P.A. requirement for admission while others may select the best applicants each year.
  • Students who transfer without completing a two-year degree may need higher than a 2.00 G.P.A., if they were not admissible based on high school records.
  • Generally, transfer colleges will exclude non-transfer courses (developmental and/or technical) when calculating the student's G.P.A
  • Colleges will accept a maximum of 60 - 65 credit hours for transfer, and up to 16 of those hours may be technical credits at many colleges.
  • Policies may vary from college to college in the transfer of "D" grades. Most public colleges will accept a "D" if it is not a part of the major or a technical credit; many private colleges will not accept a "D" grade.
  • Many colleges accept the Associate in Arts Degree (AA) as satisfying the majority of their general education requirements. If a student does not plan to receive a AA degree degree, he/she is required to take specific courses to satisfy the general education requirements of the transfer college
  • Because a state-wide articulation agreement does not exist for the Associate in Science (AS) and the Associate in General Studies (AGS) degrees, it will be necessary for each degree and its program emphasis to be individually articulated with the transfer college on a college to college basis. Special care will have to be taken to assure the student's work completed at Hawkeye is consistent with the requirements of the intended transfer college. Students should maintain contact with Hawkeye's advising staff and the intended transfer college to assure transfer prerequisites are met.
